Thankful Kindness
The bright towering sun of summer now simmers considerably lower on the horizon, shortening our days, and limiting the rays to a more sequestered angle as autumn paves through whistling frosty nips. With the Northern Hemisphere readying itself to lie dormant, activities will head indoors adjusting to a quieter, more ruminative ushering. Hearths will be a blaze for cooking and warmth.
The body and mind happily move slower, and the Soul begins to stir. No longer occupied with endless comings and goings, one can savor and reflect upon internal tugs that await in the stillness. Being grateful is linked to the Soul. As we prepare to give thanks, let’s revisit it from another perspective.

Transplanted in a new land, the Pilgrims were amiable to the welcoming Wampanoag Tribe. Even though the English colonists endured many trials and losses, they were grateful for what they did have and their new companions. Thanksgiving is rich in folklores and symbolism even though it looks quite different from its meager beginnings in 1621, however, the same sentiment prevails – giving thanks to the Lord for their bounty, health, and friends.
Everything departed from the norm for the Plymouth colonists too: the tribal attire, food, language, and dissimilar physical traits were constant reminders that they were outsiders. Instead of arming up with hostility and viewing them as an aggressive invasion, the Native Americans shared their land, resources, and wisdom – a true act of kindness. After a rough first year, both communities rejoiced together while feasting and relaxing.

The traditional fare of the Thanksgiving dinner has changed over the centuries, but still sustains the physical body, while kindness and love satisfy the Soul. As we nourish our bodies, let us remember to energize our Souls with deep gratitude and kindness, which connects us to each other and our Loving Creator, who provides everything for all. I can’t think of a better reason to give thanks. How are you counting your blessings? Soulfully speaking: Happy Thanksgiving!
~ “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart, I will tell of all your wondrous deeds,” Psalm 9:1. ~
