Town Demolishes Zombie Home In Massapequa

The blighted property, which had sat vacant for a decade, was recently torn down.

The Town of Oyster Bay recently demolished another zombie home in Massapequa last week. Located on Merrick Road , the vacant structure had been a longtime blight in the community.

"My administration takes quality of life concerns seriously and came to the assistance of local homeowners to rid the Massapequa community of this eyesore," said Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. "Following a lengthy court proceeding, this home was demolished and this property will now have the opportunity to become home to a beautiful new house in our community. Our initiative to combat zombie homes further demonstrates that we keep our promises to our residents, and put them first."

The home demolished in Massapequa stood vacant and dilapidated for over a decade, with major roof damage, disintegration of vinyl siding, rotting wood along the exterior, extensive damage to the interior roof, rotting floors and walls, mold, mildew, and rotting trash. On several occasions, the Highway Department performed property cleanups due to the rampant overgrowth of grass, bushes and weeds. The costs of those cleanups were put on the county's tax rolls.

This most recent home demolition at is the latest example in the ongoing efforts of the town's Quality of Life Task Force, chaired by Councilman Lou Imbroto, in addressing such community issues throughout the town. Last year, the Oyster Bay Town Board approved a comprehensive package of laws to combat zombie homes. The town now has the ability to fine property owners and lending institutions in violation of Town Code; recoup costs associated with town maintenance of vacant properties; and ban the use of plywood in covering residential windows and doors.
