The Unexpected Joy

Of Four Seasons

Pilgrims arrive daily. Sometimes alone, occasionally in pairs.

They appear suddenly, sometimes with an air of expectation' More often, apprehension. I recognize both emotions. I share their anxiety. I know their apprehension

The ensconced residents nod kindly, not wishing to intrude, aware their paths will cross again in the coming days, weeks, and sometimes years. They are sensitive enough not to approach too soon.

Later there will be dinner or luncheon invitations. An opportunity to bond to some slight degree, groping for communal interests. Wisely, avoiding the political arena. Tentative invitations will be extended. Possibly, an excursion to an event. Occasionally, perhaps something more adventurous, but not too often.

All in good time which at the moment seems abundant. However, the clock keeps ticking. Slowly, quietly, but constantly in motion.

While the new arrivals are greeted with restrained interest; the slow trickle of departures arouse only a vague notice. A quiet subdued acknowledgment, respectful, but still restrained.

There are reasons, of course, but too sensitive and painful to divulge

Soon first names begin to be used. A subtle air of familiarity rises slowly to the surface. Not intrusive, but welcoming. The Minuet tempo continues until it reaches the more pronounced rhythm of a waltz when groups begin to assemble.

That is when the first words of encouragement are exchanged. Invitations are casually extended and more readily accepted. There is no longer a concern about entanglements rather a willingness, if not desire, to be included.

Conversation becomes easier, and a level of comfortable acceptance is achieved, Eventually there is a mutual acknowledgment of gratitude in accepting the communal environment. One that may have seemed dubious in the beginning, but now, admittedly, comfortably endorsed.

However, the amazing reality about the mutual agreement when it is eventually reached is that it is the absolute truth. It just takes time to absorb an unexpected conclusion. Every season has its own rewards. While the memory of the heat of summer will live within us, there is an unanticipated pleasure in the cool comfort of late autumn and pristine peace of early winter.
