The man also set the home on fire Tuesday evening, police say. A search is on to track him down.

YAPHANK, NY - A man shot a resident and two dogs inside a Suffolk County home Tuesday evening and then set the house on fire, police said.

It happened in Yaphank around 5:30 p.m. at a home located at 116 Long Island Avenue, police said.

A man entered the home and then shot a 27-year-old man and his two dogs.

The man who was shot was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he is being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect apparently set the residence on fire before fleeing, police said. No arrests have been made.

One of the dogs died and the other was taken to a local animal clinic, where he is recovering from his wounds.

The dog that died was transported by the Suffolk County SPCA to the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner to have the bullet removed for the investigation, police said.

The Yaphank Fire Department extinguished the fire, which fully engulfed the home. The Medford, Ridge, Brookhaven and Middle Island fire departments also helped put out the flames.
