Police have ID'ed the man who was behind the wheel when police tracked down a fleeing vehicle early Wednesday morning.

MEDFORD, NY- Suffolk County police have released details on an incident in Medford early Wednesday in which an officer fired shots into a fleeing vehicle after it struck the officer and a police car, police said.

According to police, two Fifth Precinct officers were at the 76 gas station, located at 2243 Route 112 at the corner of Jamaica Avenue in Medford, around 1 a.m. when the clerk reported to them an attempted larceny that had occurred about 30 minutes earlier.

As the two male officers were leaving the location, the suspects’ vehicle, a 2014 Dodge Charger, returned with three occupants, police said.

The officers returned and approached the car and while officers were speaking to the vehicle’s occupants, the Dodge fled, striking one of the officers and a marked police car, police said.

After being struck by the vehicle, the officer fired three shots at the car, police said.

The suspects then fled northbound on Route 112, but the car was located a short time later on Flores Lane in Middle Island, police said.

One occupant fled the scene and one occupant, who police did not identify, was questioned and then transported to a hospital for treatment of cuts from glass that was broken by the officer’s gunfire, police said. No one was struck by the bullets.

The man who was driving the vehicle at the time it was located, 43-year-old Sheldon Davis, of Coram was arrested for and charged with DWI. He was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Wednesday.

The officer who was struck by the vehicle was transported to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The other officer was taken to a hospital for evaluation, police said.

Police are still investigating to determine who was driving the car when it struck the officer in Medford, police said.
