LI Teacher Suspended For Failing Kids For Not Standing For Pledge

On Facebook, the teacher described a time years ago when he failed students, in part, because they didn't stand for the Pledge of Allegiance

A man who has been teaching in the Uniondale School District for 30 years was recently suspended for a Facebook post in which he described a time a decade ago in which he failed two students, in part, because they didn't stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Steven Soloman, who lives in North Merrick, called the students "suckers" and "unpatriotic" in his post, according to Newsday. Parents and the public voiced complaints to the district, and Soloman, a health teacher, was moved to a non-classroom position while an investigation was taken, the district said.

“They had a 63 or 62 . . . less than passing,” Solomon told Newsday. “They did not stand for the pledge. That was part of the component, and it’s the teacher’s discretion at that point whether they want to pass them or not. But if a kid doesn’t stand for the pledge, who said he doesn’t care if these military people live or die, who doesn’t respect his peers and is a discipline problem in the classroom — why should I reward this kid?”
