On July 16, 2014, Ashley was at the apartment he shared with his then-girlfriend on Park Avenue in Roosevelt. She was breaking up with him and kicking him out, when he grabbed a knife and stabbed her multiple times in the chest and then slit her throat, the DA says. The woman suffered a punctured lung, slit throat and stab wounds, but has since recovered from her injuries.

After he stabbed his girlfriend, Ashley fled the scene in his Dodge Charger. He drove onto the Southern State Parkway and exited at Baldwin Road, where he crashed into a minivan at the intersection of Downs Road and Baldwin Road in Hempstead, causing minor injuries to the five people inside, who were on their way to church.
