Police Officers, Off-Duty Firefighter Rescue Woman From Car

The car caught fire after a crash, and the firefighter used a garden hose to keep it contained while waiting for backup.

Police officers and an off-duty firefighter rescued a woman from a burning car in Uniondale Sunday morning.

According to police, a 29-year-old woman was driving a 2008 Honda Pilot at 7:10 a.m. when she suffered a medical emergency, causing her to lose control of the car and drive into a shed on Nostrand Avenue.

The collision started a small fire under the car. An off-duty Uniondale firefighter who was in the area used a garden hose to control the fire while waiting for emergency crews to respond. Police officers were first on the scene and managed to get the woman out of the car with help from the firefighter. The fire department arrived soon after and completely extinguished the fire.
