Car Into Utility Pole Causes Outages In Dutchess County: PD

Police the driver of the car had been drinking when the crash happened.

RED HOOK, NY — A car crashing into a utility pole caused major power outages in the village and town of Red Hook Tuesday.

The Red Hook Police Department said, around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, officers were sent to North Broadway in the village for a report of a car versus telephone pole.

The initial investigation found that a 2016 Volkswagen being driven by Emily Cavotti, 20, of Red Hook, was going north on North Broadway when the car left the roadway and struck a utility pole on the east side of the street.

Authorities said the pole snapped in half causing major electrical outages throughout the town.

Cavotti was not injured in the crash, but police said she was found to be intoxicated by alcohol.

She was taken into custody and charged with two counts of driving while intoxicated, misdemeanors, and using an electronic device while driving, an infraction.

Cavotti was processed and released on tickets with a future court date.

The Red Hook police were assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, the Red Hook Fire Company and Central Hudson.
