Coronavirus: Towns Ask Cuomo For Palm Tree Containment Area

The Orange County executive had asked for the same thing and was rebuffed.

PALM TREE, NY — Town and villages near the Town of Palm Tree have asked Gov. Andrew Cuomo to establish a containment order for the municipality. As of Friday, the number of new coronavirus cases for the town were the highest in Orange County.

County Executive Steven Neuhaus had requested a containment area for Palm Tree, but it was denied, the Times Herald-Record said.

Officials from Blooming Grove, Harriman, Monroe and Woodbury penned the latest request in hopes of having an effect on the spread of the virus.

According to Orange County information, as of Friday, there were 352 confirmed cases of the virus in Palm Tree, followed by 197 in the City of Newburgh, 180 in New Windsor and 171 in Wallkill.

Confirmed cases of the virus have been estimated to be 20 to 25 percent of the county's total, MidHudson News said.

The local officials were asking Cuomo to put the same sort of containment area that was established in early March in New Rochelle, after a city resident was found to be thesecond confirmed case of the new coronavirus in the state.

The containment area in New Rochelle was a 1-mile radius centered around Young Israel of New Rochelle, the synagogue the city resident attended.

Initially, three schools within the containment area were closed, as were houses of worship, and large gathering were prohibited.
