Former Prosecutor Takes Own Life During Standoff With FBI: Reports

The former Orange County judge was being investigated in connection to a bribery scandal, according to published media reports.

CAMPBELL HALL, NY — A former prosecutor and retired judge in Orange County died in an apparent suicide as the FBI arrived at his home to arrest him, according to multiple media reports.

Federal agents and police arrived at the home of Stewart Rosenwasser in Campbell Hall to arrest him in connection to a public corruption investigation, ABC News has reported, citing law enforcement sources.

Rosenwasser was the ex-chief counsel to the Orange County DA's office and executive assistant district attorney before resigning in June. He was accused of abusing his position to initiate a criminal investigation at the behest of a restaurant owner, according to an unsealed federal indictment obtained by NBC News. Rosenwasser has been charged with accepting $63,000 in bribe payments, according to the report.

While it is believed that Rosenwasser ended his own life, it appears there was an exchange of gunfire at the suspect's home.

"The FBI is reviewing an agent-involved shooting that occurred earlier this morning in Campbell Hall, NY," the FBI said in a statement to ABC7 News' Marcus Solis. "The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents seriously. In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under review by the FBI's Inspection Division.
