Fundraising Sites Set Up For 2 Storm Victims

An 11-year-old child was killed in Newburgh and a Westchester teacher was killed in Connecticut.

Donations are being accepted to help the families of two of the people killed Tuesday because of the violent storms that went through the Hudson Valley. Gina Garzon, 11, of the City of Newburgh in Orange County, was killed when a tree fell onto a car on South Robinson Avenue around 4:40 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the GoFundMe page, Garzon was helping her mother unload the car as the storm approached.

She was trapped inside the car when the tree toppled onto it.

As of Friday evening, more than $18,000 has been raised, well beyond the goal of $8,000.

Lauren Svendsen, a middle school-high school art teacher for the North Salem School District in Westchester County was killed in New Fairfield, CT when a tree fell on her car.

Svendsen’s 3-year-old son was in the car at the time but was not injured.

The school district posted a tweet May 17 that said, “Lauren enriched the lives of each one of us. Together we can keep her kindness and love of teaching art alive.”

The GoFundMe page for Svendsen was set up by Krista Ferrara of FitBody by Krista.

Ferrara wrote, “FitBody is a tribe and together we will celebrate her life. Your strength will always be with us. Lauren was a daughter, a mom, a fiancé, an art teacher and friend who always had a smile on her face.”

As of Friday evening, more than $12,000 had been donated to help Svendsen’s family with expenses. The goal was set at $5,000.
