Graswald, Fiancé's Family Settle Legal Disputes

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — Angelika Graswald and the family of Vincent Viafore have settled their legal issues. The family of the man Graswald was convicted for being implicated in his death ended the wrongful death suit against the woman and she dropped the appeal of her criminal conviction.
A financial settlement was reached by both parties, the Journal News said, and it remains confidential.
The family said through their lawyer that having Graswald’s criminal record stand was important.

Graswald and her fiancé were kayaking on the Hudson River April 19, 2015, when she removed the plug from his kayak. She also admitted, when she pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, to knowing the locking clip to his paddle was missing.
Graswald was arrested April 30, 2015. Viafore’s body was found floating in the Hudson River in the vicinity of West Point May 23, 2015.

She received a sentence of 1-1/3 to four years and was incarcerated at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women, but was released after a little more than a month because of time served in Orange County Jail.
Graswald is from Latvia, but is a U.S. permanent resident. She may face deportation after she finished parole.
