Graswald Trial Still Set To Begin Mid-August

Graswald will likely present a defense that she falsely confessed to murder.

GOSHEN, NY — The repeatedly delayed trial of Angelika Graswald is still set to begin August 15 with jury selection, an Orange County judge said. Attorneys for the woman who is accused of manslaughter in connection with the death of her fiance Vincent Viafore met in judge’s chambers Monday.

Richard Portale, the head of Graswald’s defense time, said Viafore’s death was an accident and that she falsely confessed to the police, the Poughkeepsie Journal said. [Get Patch’s Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts here.]

Graswald allegedly admitted she murdered Viafore while kayaking on the Hudson River in 2015.

Police said she had initially called 911 to report they were kayaking in rough water which caused her fiance’s kayak to capsize. Graswald said she fell out of hers while trying to help him.
