'Heartbreaking Tragedy,' Neighbor Shot Dead After 'Long-Standing Dispute'
Another man at the scene of the shooting was detained pending further investigation, according to New Windsor police.
TOWN OF NEW WINDSOR, NY — A longtime feud between neighbors turned deadly this morning.
The Town of New Windsor Police Department says that on Wednesday, around 8:59 a.m., officers responded to Hawthorn Way after receiving a report of shots fired.
At the scene, police found a man with several gunshot wounds. Police and New Windsor EMS immediately attempted resuscitative efforts. He was taken to Montefiore-St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, in Newburgh, where he was later pronounced dead.

"As Town Supervisor, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to all of the agencies involved in today's investigation, especially the Town of New Windsor Police Department and our Detective Division, for their swift and professional response," Town Supervisor Stephen Bedetti said. "I also thank the New York State Police and the Orange County District Attorney's Office for their assistance."
"This is a heartbreaking tragedy for our community," the supervisor added. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. While this appears to be an isolated incident, it is a sobering reminder of how quickly disputes can escalate, and we ask our residents to continue looking out for one another."

The name of the victim is being withheld until the next of kin are notified.
Another man at the scene was detained pending further investigation, police said. An initial investigation determined that the shooting followed a long-standing dispute between neighbors.
Police say that the shooting was an isolated incident, and there is no threat to the public at this time.
Town of New Windsor police thanked the New York State Police and the Orange County District Attorney's Office for their assistance.
