2 In Custody After Port Jervis Gun Violence Threat: UPDATE

Police said a false social media post said there had been a shooting at the high school.

PORT JERVIS, NY — Two Port Jervis High School students are in custody Thursday after posting a threat of gun violence on social media. The names and ages of the teens have not been released.

News 12 said it was unclear if charges against them were filed.

PORT JERVIS, NY — Schools are open Thursday in Port Jervis but there is an increased police presence after a threatening social media post. A message on the school district’s website said that school officials were notified that the Port Jervis Police Department was investigating the post that had a threatening nature, and that the individuals involved were quickly identified and taken into custody.

Police determined that there is no credible threat to the safety and security of the schools.

The Town of Deerpark Police Department posted on Facebook that they had received numerous calls about social media posts about a shooting at the Port Jervis High School campus.

“These posts are FALSE and are not based on facts,” the police department said.

Nonetheless, the Port Jervis and Deerpark police departments will be providing an increased police presence in each of the district’s schools.

School officials said administrators, counselors and staff will be available throughout the day if any students have questions or concerns.

FIOS1 News said the high school principal sent a letter to parents alerting them to the fact that in two separate incidents bullet casings were found at the school and police were investigating.
