Massive Fire at Gap Complex Still Under Investigation

The ATF has federal jurisdiction over fires that involve interstate commerce.

FISHKILL, NY — The cause of the massive fire at the Gap Distribution Center in Fishkill has yet to be determined.

New York State Police said its investigation continues into the commercial structure fire that occurred Monday, August 29.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives National Response Team is on scene and is partnering with the Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division, the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and the State Police to determine the cause of the blaze.

The State Police said the demolition of a section of the building that was at risk of collapse began Wednesday.

Anyone with information relevant to the investigation is asked to contact the State Police in Poughkeepsie at 845-677-7300.

About 600 people worked in Building 100 at the distribution center which was destroyed by the fire.

The fire began about 11 p.m. and more than 20 fire departments from Dutchess, Putnam and Orange counties assisted in the fire-fighting efforts.

Dutchess County officials said they are working with Gap and state agencies to help the company and its displaced employees.

The distribution centers employ about 1,300 people.

The Poughkeepsie Journal said the Gap employees who work in other parts of the complex were unable to return to work Wednesday.
