Newburgh Man Accused Of Shooting Woman In Face Indicted

At the time of the shooting, the defendant had recently been certified and licensed for a handgun as an armed guard.

MARLBORO, NY — The Newburgh man who allegedly shot a female friend in the face was indicted Tuesday by the Ulster County Grand Jury. Darren Olympia, 22, was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, for allegedly recklessly causing serious physical injury to the woman with a loaded firearm.

Authorities said Olympia and the woman, who was 21 at the time, had been out drinking in Newburgh Feb. 26 and returned to a Bingham Road address in Marlboro.

During that time, Olympia, who had recently been certified and licensed for a handgun as an armed guard, allegedly produced his loaded weapon and discharged one round.

The bullet struck the victim’s forehead and “blew out her facial bones,” according to the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
