Troopers located Patterson and one of them began talking with him while the other trooper drove their vehicle beside them.

Police said the preliminary investigation found he was uncooperative and refused to comply with commands.

Patterson then tried to get into the troopers' car, police said, at which time one of the troopers fired his weapon and struck him.

Police assistance was called for immediately, and he was treated at the scene.

Patterson later died at Orange Regional Medical Center.
