Officer Injured In Incident Involving Stolen Vehicle, Handguns

The city of Poughkeepsie officer was injured taking a teenager with a loaded handgun into custody.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — A city of Poughkeepsie police officer was injured taking a 16-year-old with a loaded handgun into custody Thursday.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. Thursday, police located a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of 176 Rinaldi Blvd., which is where Shadows on the Hudson is located.

Police said the vehicle was stolen out of Stamford, Connecticut, and there were several people in it.

When officers initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, several people got out and ran away.

An officer chased after them and stopped a 16-year-old city resident. The teen had a loaded handgun in his possession, police said.

The teen was detained, but the officer was injured. He was treated at a local hospital and later released.

Two other people who fled from the car were caught a short distance away. There were 16- and 17-year-old city residents.

Three other people who remained in the car got out of it and complied with the officers' commands. They were detained without further incident, police said.

They were identified as Semaj Godfrey, 20, of the city of Poughkeepsie, Zayre Davis, 18, of Stamford, Connecticut, and a 15-year-old city resident.

Police said that, during the course of the investigation, a loaded handgun was found in the vehicle.

All of those who were detained were taken to the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department for further investigation. They were later arraigned in the City of Poughkeepsie Court.

All except the 15-year-old were charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, felonies.

The 16-year-old who was arrested with the loaded handgun, police said, was charged with an additional count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree assault, felonies.

Police said the 15-year-old had an active Dutchess County Family Court juvenile delinquent arrest warrant and was sent to a secure detention facility in another county. The teen will face charges in Dutchess County Family Court for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, felonies.

The remaining juveniles were all released to their parents because there were no other available beds in secure youth detention facilities in the state, police said.

Godfrey and Davis were both sent to the Dutchess County Jail, according to the authorities.
