Roundabout To Be Built At 3-Road Intersection In Wappinger
The heavily traveled triangular intersection is next to the Hudson Valley Regional Airport.

WAPPINGER, NY — The New York Department of Transportation is beginning work on a $5.8 million project that will put a roundabout at a complicated intersection in the town of Wappinger.
According to the DOT, a modern roundabout will be constructed at the triangular intersection of Route 376, New Hackensack Road and All Angels Hill Road.
The reconfiguration will feature streetscaping, landscaping, pedestrian crosswalks and a pocket park and is designed to smooth flow and enhance safety at the heavily trafficked location near the Hudson Valley Regional Airport.

DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez said merging the three roadways into a modern roundabout will improve traffic flow and create better access to the county's many agricultural and shopping destinations.
"Building back better starts with the needs of our local communities and this project, along with the recent announcement of the expansion of operational support buildings at nearby Hudson Valley Regional Airport, are great examples of the smart transportation infrastructure investments Gov. Hochul and the department are making across New York State," she said.

Officials said the roundabout will improve the functionality of the intersection, while easing traffic flow, reducing congestion and making it easier to navigate the convergence of the three heavily traveled roads.
About half an acre of asphalt will be removed and replaced with compost and topsoil. Fifty-two native trees will be planted, along with 112 shrubs and 112 plants.
Field preparation, survey and utility work is getting underway this fall, weather permitting. The majority of the construction is scheduled for the 2022 and 2023 construction seasons. The project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2023.
Construction is expected to be done in stages, including traffic shifts, alternating one-way traffic and minimal closures. Throughout construction, digital message boards will be posted and travel advisories distributed to alert motorists about traffic changes.
Wappinger Town Supervisor Richard Thurston said the reconstruction of the Route 376 intersection will be a game-changer for the town.
"Not only will the project remediate a major congestion point in the town, but it will also help the town to address new residential and commercial opportunities in the New Hackensack hamlet," he said.
