Troopers found Luke H. Patterson, 41, of Tannersville, Greene County. One of the troopers began talking with him while the other trooper drove their vehicle beside them.

Police said Patterson was uncooperative and refused to comply with their commands.

He then tried to get into the troopers' car, at which time one of the troopers fired his weapon and struck him.

Patterson later died at Orange Regional Medical Center.

State Attorney General Letitia James said May 24 said her office will investigate the shooting, because it has a role as special prosecutor when there are police-involved shootings in the state.
