Poughkeepsie Building Collapse: Top Floors To Be Demolished

The mayor said it will be easier to assess the surrounding buildings with the top floors removed.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — The top three floors of Poughkeepsie building that collapsed Monday during a thunderstorm will be demolished. The historic building at 19 Academy St. collapsed and dropped debris on nearby buildings and the street during a storm that produced 60 mph wind gusts.

Ten people were displaced due to evacuations, seeking shelter with the Mid-Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Poughkeepsie Journal said.

Two people were trapped in 15 Academy St. Monday and both were rescued.
