5 Events Not to Miss This November at 53rd Street Library

Coding classes, citizenship test learning, story time, and, of course, election day voting.

MIDTOWN, NY — The 53rd Street Library has lots of events this month for all ages, and we chose five of the most exciting, not-to-miss ones coming up in the month of November so you can prepare or register. The 53rd Street Library really is a community resource, offering everything from coding classes for children to citizenship classes for adult immigrants. Check it out:

  • Google CS First Coding Club: Code a Story on Monday, Nov. 7: Kids ages 5 to 12 learn how to code their own story using the Google CS First and MIT Scratch program at 53rd Street. It's an 8-week course that will teach kids how to use Scratch coding to create their own story. It's 8 sessions for 15 children who pre-register. All 15 spots for this session have been filled, but you can be on the waitlist by emailing 53stbranch@nypl.org. In your email include your name, contact information and your child's name and age. The library will contact you if you're moved off the waitlist. Find more information here.
  • The 53rd Street Library is a Polling Site on Tuesday, Nov. 8! Vote in the community room. Click here to see if you are registered. Check here to find out where you vote.
  • For the Public: The Conversation on Thursday, Nov. 10: The Conversation is a multi-media company and collective of young poets of color. They will return to NYC to share poems and comment on young writers of color and their influence on literature. After the reading, there will be a question and answer session facilitated by Miles Hodges. Jeremy Clark, Nabila Lovelace, Ish, Courtney Lamar Charleston, and Camonghne Felix will all read their poems. Event starts at 7 p.m. Find more info here.
  • Board Game Bonanza! on Saturday, Nov. 12: Play board games on Saturdays with others from the neighborhood. They have Candyland, Connect 4, and classics like chess and checkers. Everyone is welcome to attend, beginners to advanced. Meet-up starts at 2 p.m. Find more info here.
  • U.S. Citizen Workshop on Saturday, Nov. 19: The library invites adults who are preparing to take the United States Citizenship Test to take the monthly practice workshop which will focus on several of the 100 citizenship test civics questions. You'll learn about library resources and online resources to practice citizenship test questions at home as well. The class provides students with an N-400 Application for Naturalization and a free pocket study guide with answers to all of the civics questions. Space is limited to the first 30 students so get there as early as possible, because there's no registration. Official time is 1-3 p.m. but get there around 12:30 or earlier. Find more info here.
