Al Sharpton: Anti-Gun Violence Rally Planned Outside Trump Tower

The Rev. Al Sharpton and a survivor of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting announced the rally on Saturday.

MIDTOWN, NY — The Rev. Al Sharpton and a survivor of the Florida school shooting and plan to hold a rally outside President Donald Trump's longtime Manhattan apartment to decry gun violence enabled by access to assault-style weapons. The rally is slated for June 2. It will start at Trump International Tower on Columbus Circle and head to Fifth Avenue and Trump Tower, The Associated Press reported.

Sharpton on Saturday joined Aalayah Eastmond, a 16-year-old junior at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, to make the announcement.

The June event will coincide with the beginning of New York's Gun Violence Awareness Month. Sharpton also hopes to bring attention to how police deal with individuals with mental health issues.

Fifteen years ago, Eastmond, said her uncle was shot to death in Brooklyn.

“I actually lost my uncle to gun violence in Brooklyn,” she said. “So for it to happen to me, in my face, that just shows that change has to happen now,” she said.

Accused Parkland school shooter Nikolas Jacob Cruz began his alleged murderous rampage in an Uber, according to court documents and the Broward County sheriff's office. The 19-year-old Cruz said he was the gunman who entered the school campus armed with an AR-15 and began shooting students that he saw in the hallways and on the school grounds, court documents said.
