Penn Station Hit With Delays After Amtrak Train Gets Stuck

A disabled Amtrak train got stuck in the Hudson River tunnel, stalling NJ Transit trains by as much as 30 minutes.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — Commuters heading into Penn Station from New Jersey Thursday were delayed as much as 30 minutes after an Amtrak train got stuck in a tunnel underneath the Hudson River, New Jersey Transit officials announced Thursday.

Amtrak train 180 on the Northeast Regional line broke down in the south tube of the Hudson River tunnels around 9:20 a.m., an Amtrak spokesman said. The train was not evacuated and was clear of the tunnel by 9:45 a.m., the spokesman said.

No crew or passengers on the train were injured, an Amtrak spokesman said.

Train delays of 15 minutes were first reported by NJ Transit officials around 9 a.m., and delays were upgraded to 30 minutes about 10 minutes later. Amtrak and NJ transit passengers can expect residual delays throughout the morning, an Amtrak spokesman said.
