Eagles' Winter Season Recap

Cheerleaders win nationals, senior wrestler Matt Ross takes second in states.

The 2010-2011 varsity sports winter season in Rocky Point saw a national champion and a state champion runner up in what was an exhilarating season for the Eagles.

Wrestling

In the , senior Matt Ross, wrestling at 145 pounds, defeated Zach Bass of Westhampton Beach to earn a third place finish and a spot in the State Tournament. Eighth-grader Thomas Dutton also placed in , finishing fifth with a win over Jorge Barrerio of West Babylon at 119 pounds.

In the state tournament, Ross won three matches en route to a finals matchup with No.1 seed James Kloc of Iroquois. Ross couldn't defeat Kloc, but his performance earned him an All-State finish for this second time in his high school career. His record now stands at 213-27 and he is one of just four Rocky Point wrestlers to earn 200 victories.

Boys Basketball

Record: 2-10 League V, 3-15 Overall

The varsity boys basketball team struggled this season with just two league wins. A small saving grace for their season was that both of those league wins were against crosstown rival Miller Place, who missed the playoffs by just one game. Kodi Lubkeman and Steve Soltysik led the Eagles in scoring.

Bowling

The Rocky Point bowling team came in sixth place in league five with 167 team points. They went 15-21 in 36 games bowled. Rachel Magnusson led the Eagles with a high-game of 258, an average score of 190 and 24.5 games won. Stephen Meier and Kevin Blake won 14 games each for Rocky Point.

Girls Basketball

Record: 0-13 League V, 1-17 Overall

The girls basketball team struggled with a young squad this season and failed to win a league game. Their lone win of the season came back on Dec. 18 against Southold, a 37-26 victory.

Despite the tough season, eight-grader Annie Kennedy showed a lot of promise, consistently teaming with senior captain Shannon Grodotzke to lead the Eagles in scoring.
