Legislator Anker Initiates Suffolk County's School Traffic Safety Commission

Hauppauge, N.Y. – Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker chaired the first meeting of the School Traffic Safety Commission at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge on Thursday, August 20th. The meeting included discussion of current issues near school zones, school bus safety, as well as discussion of priority safety areas such as schools near highways and troublesome intersection.

“Traffic safety is a top priority and I will continue to advocate for safer streets for our children,” said Legislator Anker, “The Commission will provide insight as to where the most dangerous locations are in Suffolk County by surveying the schools and analyzing police reports. As our roads become more congested, we must address the need for better traffic safety initiatives and this Commission will provide direction and guidance towards making our streets safer for our kids and their families.”

Legislator Anker’s legislation to establish a School Traffic Safety Commission was unanimously approved by the Suffolk County Legislature in March 2015. The commission includes nine members of various organizations and county departments including the Suffolk County Department of Public Works, the Suffolk Region PTA, and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association.
