Local Lax Roundup: Adelphi Wins Third Straight National Title Under Spallina, Northwestern Continues Run

Rocky Point's Joe Spallina leads Adelphi to third straight DII National Title.

In his fourth year as head women's lacrosse coach at Adelphi University, Rocky Point's Joe Spallina led his team to its third straight Division II National Championship, defeating Limestone College, 17-4.

Junior Erica Devito, Shoreham, scored four times and added three assists to lead the Panthers. Freshman Emily Mercier and junior Alison Staudt, both from Rocky Point, came off the bench and Mercier caused one turnover.

Adelphi finished a perfect 20-0 on the season and the 13-goal victory was the largest margin of victory in a National Championship game in Division II Women's Lacrosse history.

Division I Men's

Tommy Palasek (Rocky Point), Syracuse

Palasek and the No.1 Syracuse Orangemen were shut down in a 6-5 upset by unranked Maryland Sunday. After notching four assists and a goal in his Palasek was held to one shot on goal and had two turnovers in the loss.

Division I Women's

Kara Mupo (Rocky Point), Northwestern

No.2 Northwestern continued its run throughout the DI bracket with a dominating 18-4 quarterfinal victory over Albany Saturday. Star goalkeeper Brianne LoManto continued her solid play in net, earning the win after allowing four goals in 50 minutes of action while making two saves.

Mupo had one shot on goal in the game. Northwestern plays No.3 North Carolina (15-5) in the semifinals on Friday.

Division III Women's

Taylor Reh (Miller Place), Cortland

Janine Glass (Miller Place), Cortland

Cortland suffered a tough 13-11 semifinal loss to Gettysburg Saturday. Reh scored a goal on two shots and picked up a ground ball in the game. She finished with 19 goals and three assists in her freshman year with Cortland.
