Sound Beach Woman Sentenced to 3 to 9 Years for Death of Her Baby

Mom gets 3 to 9 years after being convicted of second-degree manslaughter in March.

Jennifer Jorgensen, of Sound Beach, was sentenced to 3 to 9 years in prison for the death of her baby born prematurely in an accident in Ridge that also killed two others in 2008.

Jorgensen was sentenced Friday after being convicted of , according to a report in Newsday (subscription required).

Prosecutors asked for the maximum of 5 to 15 years in prison, the report states.

The Sound Beach woman was acquitted of two counts of second-degree manslaughter, one count of operating a motor vehicle while under the combined influence of drugs or alcohol and one count of aggravated vehicular homicide.

The crash killed Robert Kelly, 75, who died at the scene. His wife, Mary Kelly, 70, died of her injuries three weeks later. orgensen, 32, of Sound Beach, was eight months pregnant when the crash occurred and gave birth by emergency C-section after the collision. The infant, Ashley Jorgensen-Kaiser, died five days later from injuries caused by the crash, resulting in the manslaughter conviction.

Jorgensen has filed an appeal, according to the report. Defense attorney Martin Lorenzotti said he hopes to get her freed on bail while the appeal is pending.
