Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. Two men have been arrested and charged with attempted murder of two people in Westbury last month. Nassau County police said they were called at 3:43 a.m. on April 22 to the parking lot at 741 Merrick Ave., where the Park West nightclub is located, and found a 26-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman had been shot in the leg. Police arrested Jordan Ayala, 26, of Bellerose, on April 30 in connection with the shooting, and a week later Nharon Hicks, 33, of Long Beach, surrendered himself to detectives. (Patch)
  2. Two longtime local movie theaters have reportedly closed for good: Bow Tie Herricks Cinemas at 3324 Hillside Ave. in New Hyde Park and Roslyn Cinema at 20 Tower Place. Both locations are listed for sale in commercial property listings on LoopNet. The two theaters had reopened following closures due to COVID-19 but closed again within a few months. Movie theaters that remain open in the Mineola area include the AMC Roosevelt Field 8 Theater in Garden City and the AMC Raceway 10 Theater in Westbury. (The Island 360)
  3. Kurt Kiess, a Manhasset man who lost his son tragically in a car accident in Quogue, is advocating for new legislation that would bring more financial compensation to grieving families who have lost loved ones in wrongful death cases. New York State Sen. Brad Hoylman, who is sponsoring the act, explained: "No amount of money can replace a father, a daughter, a sibling, a domestic partner, or a spouse — but financial compensation for family members grieving a loved one's wrongful death is a necessary accountability tool."
