Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- A man with a gun robbed the 7-Eleven at 797 Peninsula Blvd. in Hempstead Thursday night, according to Nassau County police. They said the suspect entered the store at 10:25 p.m., pulled out a handgun and demanded money from an employee. The worker gave him the cash and he ran off. The man is described as a 6-foot-tall black man with a thin build. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. (Patch)
- New York state judges ruled that the new congressional districts proposed by Democrats were gerrymandered and are unconstitutional. The panel of five, mid-level appellate judges ruled that the new district map "was drawn to discourage competition and favor Democrats." If the decision is upheld, the district lines will not be used for the midterm elections in November. (Patch)
- Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Medical Center in New Hyde Park, part of Northwell Health, has achieved top recognition for lung cancer care by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). LIJ earned the highest rating of three stars for two types of lung cancer surgeries, lobectomy and pulmonary resection. Northwell's system director of thoracic surgery, Dr. Paul Lee, said they are using minimally invasive robotic techniques for surgery whenever possible. (Patch)

- Family & Children's Association: "FCA could not serve Long Island the way that we do without our incredible volunteers. Nicholas Mierzejewski recently completed his Eagle Scout project at Nassau Haven. He planned and built shelving units and completely reorganized the attic to create a 'clothing store' for residents where everything is free! Residents of Nassau Haven, FCA's shelter for youth experiencing homelessness, often come in with very few belongings and sometimes have never had the experience of picking out their own clothing. This is especially helpful for older youth who are interviewing for jobs as the 'store' has a special section for professional wear. Nicholas, we cannot thank you enough!" (Facebook)

I wrote to her asking not to cut it down, but the ad is still there. Please search and write to this person to ask her not to remove this beautiful tree. Thanks!" (Nextdoor)
