Bites Nearby: Pollos el Paisa

Authentic Colombian food in Westbury.

The bright pumpkin and maroon colored diner on Old Country Road in Westbury is the home of Pollos el Paisa, a restaurant that offers typical Colombian food.

Pollos el Paisa – Chicken is king. More than 70 are consumed each weekday (and more on the weekend) at this restaurant that is packed with people north and south of the border. The chicken is seasoned for two days in a blend of fresh herbs, wine, beer, vinegar, garlic, salt and pepper, and more. Then it is put on the rotisserie. The skin is beautifully browned and the meat is succulent. It can be had quartered halved or whole.

The cuisine is country food – hearty and filling – and nothing exemplifies that more than “Mountain Platter,” with ground or grilled beef, fried egg, beans, pork rinds, sweet plantain, rice, avocado and corn cake. Skirt steak is another popular choice. You can go lighter. Whole red snapper, steamed or fried, is a good choice. Each day a different soup is featured such as oxtail, lentil and fish but the rich chicken soup is always available. And, as always, there’s the wonderful roasted chicken.
