Winthrop-University Hospital’s Division of Neurology is offering a free “Caregiver’s Seminar” for those who care for someone with a neurological disorder, such as Alzheimer’s, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s or stroke. The program will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at 7:00 PM, at Winthrop-University Hospital’s Dr. Martin Spatz Conference Center, Room A, located in the basement of the main hospital at 259 First Street in Mineola. It will address common issues experienced by caregivers and will also provide information about resources available within the community.
Speakers include Reverend Gregory L. Johnson, the creator of the Care for the Family Caregivers Program, and founding member and Co-Chair of the New York City Family Caregiver Coalition; and Craig Jennings, founder of the Caring for Caregiver organization, which has four locations on Long Island. Both speakers will offer information about coping mechanisms and strategies for dealing with the challenges of care giving.
In addition, representatives from local agencies will display information relevant to caring for a loved one either at home or in a facility. Some of these will include physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy services; rehabilitation services; skilled nursing care and home health aides; transportation and psychosocial support.
