Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. Long Island Restaurant Week returns on Sunday, Jan. 23 and diners can enjoy a three-course prix fixe dinner for $25, $35, or $42 at participating restaurants. A $20 two-course lunch is also available at some locales. More than 90 restaurants in Nassau and Suffolk counties are participating, including two in Mineola: Cassariano Italian Eatery at 348 E. Jericho Turnpike. and Eric's Italian Bistro at 70 E. Old Country Road. (Mineola Patch)
  2. Seven Long Island high school students, including five from Nassau County, have been selected among 40 finalists in the prestigious 2022 Regeneron Science Talent Search. The finalists received $25,000 and will go on to compete for a top prize of $250,000 on March 15. Han Byur Youn of Roslyn High School was selected for the project, "Why We Vote: How Positive Descriptive Norms and Holding a Minority Political Viewpoint Increase Citizens' Intention and Responsibility to Vote."   3. Deborah Nickerson, a pioneering genome researcher who helped discover genes responsible for cardiovascular disease and autism, passed away at age 67. Nickerson was born in Mineola and grew up in Jamaica, Queens and West Islip, Long Island; her parents owned a garden center. Nickerson started her career in science by earning a bachelor's degree in biology from Adelphi University in Garden City in 1974. (The New York Times)
