Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. The MTA has released the identity of the man struck and killed by an LIRR train near the Mineola station last week. Chesnel Veillard, 81, of New Cassel was trespassing on the LIRR tracks and was hit by a train on the Main Line. Veillard apparently suffered from dementia and went missing hours before the train killed him. (Mineola Patch)
  2. The UBS Arena in Elmont opened its doors Saturday night as the New York Islanders took on the Calgary Flames. Fans were wowed by the beautiful, new $1.1 billion building, with a larger seating capacity than both of the Islanders previous homes, Brooklyn's Barclays Center and the renovated Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale. Unfortunately, the Flames beat the Islanders 5-2. (NY Daily News)
  3. The Town of North Hempstead has started a Small Business Spotlight initiative, featuring local businesses and the services and goods they are selling.
