The Mineola Board of Education held a workshop session on Wednesday, April 27. Here are some of the things you may have missed.
BOCES Budget
- The board voted in favor of the proposed BOCES budget for the 2011-12 school year in the amount of $18,947,178.
- The board also cast voted for the three candidates running for 3 year terms on the BOCES board: Deborah Coates, Eric Schultz and Stephen B. Witt.

- An agreement was approved between the Mineola and Manhasset school districts to provide special education services to parentally-placed Mineola students for the 2010-11 school year.
- A contract with Winter Bros. for garbage and rubbish removal was extended for the period of July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012 in the amount of $32,990.
- Three summer workers were approved to work three half-days and three evenings to assist with Mineola East one week prior to school opening.
- All 10 Mineola 10 month bus drivers were named as substitute drivers for summer 2011 in the event they are needed as per the bus contract. They will be paid at a rate of $23 per hour.
Election Workers
- The board approved a list of four chief election inspectors, 12 registrars and 18 inspectors to serve during the annual district budget vote on May 17 at the various schools at an hourly rate of $10.
- While the vast majority will work from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., chief election inspectors will stay until 10:30 p.m. and eight registrars and eight inspectors will only work eight hour shifts.
New Policies

- The board waived a second reading of a new policy entitled “Harassment and Bullying” and voted for its adoption. According to Superintendent Nagler, the policy applies to all teachers, staff and students.
- A second reading was also waived on a board policy entitled “School Board Member Authority,” which was also adopted. The policy specifically deals with board members speaking as individuals as opposed to on behalf of the body. Trustees McGrath and Parrino voted against the adoption.
Other Board News
- A field trip for fifth grade students from to Philadelphia on May 18, 2011 was approved.
- Should the with be approved, the Mineola School District would be providing a teacher for students with IEPs. No programs at the public schools would be affected.
The next meeting of the Mineola Board of Education will be on Thursday, May 5 at 8 p.m. at the .
