🌱 Mineola MS-13 Member Pleads Guilty To Murder + Post-Roe Protest

Here are the top stories in Mineola today:
- A MS-13 gang member from Mineola, Luis Alejandro Varela, aka Felon, 24, of Mineola, and another from Uniondale, William Reyes-Fuentes aka Desobediente, 27, pleaded guilty to the August 2017 murder of Carlos Rivas-Majano, who was reportedly lured into the woods and hacked to death by machetes. The victim's body was found a year later in a pit near the Meadowbrook Parkway in Uniondale. The gang members are due back in court on Aug. 9 and are expected to get 20-21 years to life in prison, according to prosecutors. (Mineola Patch)
- Within hours of the overturning of Roe v. Wade on Friday, more than 250 people gathered outside of the Nassau County courthouse in Mineola to protest the Supreme Court decision to end legalized abortion nationwide. Ariana Levin, 18, of Westbury, stood next to her grandmother, Barbara Levin, 74, who remembered helping women who medically suffered after getting illegal abortions before Roe v. Wade. (Newsday)
- Nassau County Department of Health commissioner Lawrence Eisenstein, based in Mineola, is leaving his role at the end of July to take a job in the private sector. Eisenstein was the head of the department for 11 years and led the county through the COVID-19 crisis. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is conducting a nationwide search to find a replacement for Eisenstein. (Mineola Patch)
