Nassau County Stepping Up DWI, BWI Enforcement Over Weekend

There will be more patrols on both land and sea this Labor Day weekend.

With Labor Day coming up on Monday, the county has announced that it will be intensifying patrols over the holiday weekend.

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano said on Thursday that Nassau County will participate in a STOP-DWI program that allocates additional police officers to conduct extensive DWI and BWI enforcement initiatives over this Labor Day holiday weekend. Nassau County Police will also intensify anti-terror patrols and monitor social media in addition to working with partners in local, state and federal law enforcement to gather critical intelligence in an effort to ensure the safety of all residents.

"Drunk drivers and boaters put the lives and safety of innocent people in jeopardy every time they get behind the wheel," Mangano said. "Nassau County police officers will be targeting drunk drivers and boaters ... to prevent the kind of senseless alcohol-related accidents that, unfortunately, often occur during a holiday. Chances are, if you drive drunk, you will be arrested. Please think before you drink. Don’t drink and drive."

There were 54 DWI arrests in Nassau County over last year’s Labor Day weekend. This year, through the end of July, there have been 1,293 arrests in Nassau County, with 9 fatalities.

Intensified police patrols for this Labor Day weekend are funded by a special grant from the New York State STOP DWI Coordinator’s Association and the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The NCPD’s Highway Patrol Bureau, with the Nassau County STOP DWI Program, will coordinate this initiative that targets certain areas throughout Nassau County.
