Here are the top stories today in Mineola:
- The Nassau County District Attorney's Office in Mineola has formed a Firearms Suppression and Intelligence Unit to fight the increase of illegal weapons in the county. In this year alone, Nassau County police seized 94 firearms during criminal investigations from Jan. 1 to March 9. "Our objective when we arrest a person with one gun is to find out where that gun came from and work our way up the pyramid to find out who is the gun supplier," said Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly. (Mineola Patch)
- Keith Corbett, current mayor of Malverne, announced he is running for Congress as representative of New York's 4th District, held by Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice. The 4th District is a large chunk of Nassau County that includes Mineola, Garden City, Carle Place and Westbury. Three other Democrats have already thrown their hat in the ring, including County Legislators Siela Bynoe and Carrié Solages, and former Town Supervisor Laura Gillen. The lone Republican candidate is tech CEO Bill Staniford, of Lawrence. The primary will be held on June 28. (liherald.com)
- Capt. William Carit Hansen of Shelter Island passed away at age 88. Hansen and his wife, Janet Ann raised five children in Mineola: William (Jill) Hansen, Douglas (Susan) Hansen, Tammy (Andrew) Cavanaugh, Kim (Darren) Messina, and Christian (Shiobhan) Hansen. After retiring as a harbor pilot, Hansen and his wife moved to Shelter Island in 1985 and opened Homeport Antiques and Collectibles in the barn on their property. (Shelter Island Reporter)
