Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. The statewide mask mandate for schools ends today, March 2, as Long Island schools — including Mineola — are now adopting a mask-optional policy. Nassau County parents in various towns have been pushing for unmasking for months, including those in the Massapequa school district. In other towns such as Jericho, many students and teachers were expected to still be wearing masks, according to Jericho's Superintendent Henry Grishman. (CBS New York)
  2. A 20-year-old man who is reportedly a gang member and wanted for a murder in Hempstead has been arrested following a shootout in Uniondale early Tuesday morning. According to Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, officers pulled over the vehicle he was driving in connection to a Levittown robbery. The suspect got out of the car and allegedly shot at police officers, hitting a police vehicle. He then ran off and officers chased him across various backyards until he was eventually caught. (News12 Long Island)
  3. Four commuter friendly co-op apartments have recently been listed for sale in downtown Mineola, including a 1 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom unit at 100 Clinton Ave. with a private terrace, private parking available, and a laundry room located on each floor of the building for $299,000.
