Work Up to the 7-Minute Workout

Don't get overwhelmed; work up to this workout.

Inspired by a study on the benefits of high-intensity circuit training, The New York Times 7-Minute Workout originally consisted of illustrated instructions in the newspaper. The fitness routine quickly became so popular that it inspired multiple apps, Web sites, an Advanced 7-Minute Workout and more.

The 7-Minute Workout is great for those who are already active. But if you’re a bit of a couch potato, the intensity could be overwhelming or even discouraging.

That’s why I’ve devised a full-body circuit especially for out-of-shape readers. It includes 11 moves separated by 15-second breaks and should take 11 or 12 minutes. It’s less intense, yet can recondition muscles and the cardiovascular system--perfect for someone who’s starting at Square One.

Do this circuit every other day. When you can finish the whole circuit comfortably, repeat the routine after a 90-second pause. When you can comfortably finish three circuits, consider tackling the original 7-Minute Workout.

The North Shore-LIJ Rehabilitation Network offers locations throughout the metro New York area. Our Sports Therapy Treatment Performance Program provides all-encompassing care for athletes.
