15-Year-Old With A Knife & 14-Year-Old With A Gun Arrested At School

In separate incidents on Friday, two Mount Vernon City School District students were arrested and charged with weapons possession.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — Educators made a pair of troubling discoveries on Friday as two students were arrested on weapons charges at school.

In separate incidents on Friday, two Mount Vernon school district students were arrested and charged with weapons possession. Both incidents took place on school property.

In the first case, around 8 a.m., Mount Vernon High School staff contacted the Mount Vernon Police Department after discovering a student had a knife. Police confiscated the knife and took the student into custody. The 15-year-old was taken to police headquarters and turned over to youth detectives for processing.

The student was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a person less than 16 years of age.

In the second incident, just hours later, at approximately 11 a.m., Lincoln School officials contacted police about a student possessing a handgun. Police took control of the unloaded gun and placed the 14-year-old into custody. The student was also then taken to police headquarters and turned over to youth detectives for processing.

The student was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the 4th degree and unlawful possession of a weapon by a person less than 16 years of age.

Police said the Mount Vernon Police Intel Unit, Violent Crimes Unit and Wellness, along with the Mount Vernon School District, are working together to curb youth violence.

Mount Vernon Police are asking anyone with information about these incidents, or any other incidents involving illegal weapon possession, to contact the MVPD Detective Division at 914-665-2510. All calls will be kept confidential, according to police. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the MVPD "Text-A-Tip" by texting "MVPD" and your tip to 847411. Information can also be sent anonymously using the "Mount Vernon PD" app in the Google Play and Apple Store.
