5 Years For Attempted Rape Of Grandmother Pushing Stroller In Yonkers

A 29-year-old from the Bronx grabbed the victim from behind, put his hands under her shirt and tried to drag her into the bushes.

YONKERS, NY — A brazen daylight sexual assault in Westchester will send a Bronx man to prison.

Steven Hernandez, 29, was sentenced to five years in prison for the attempted rape of a woman in Yonkers, Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah announced today. He will also be subject to 12 years of post-release supervision and will be required to register as a sex offender.

On July 30, 2021, shortly before 1:30 p.m., the victim was pushing her grandchild in a stroller and was about to enter an apartment building in Yonkers when Hernandez grabbed her from behind, put his hands under her shirt and groped her. The stranger attempted to push the victim into a nearby bush and a struggle ensued as Hernandez pulled at the victim’s hips and clothing, and then exposed and fondled himself.

During the incident, Hernandez repeatedly said the word "sex."

A bystander, who heard the victim screaming, approached the scene to help the victim and the attacker ran away. The Yonkers Police Department arrested Hernandez shortly after the incident.

In May, Hernandez entered a guilty plea to felony attempted rape.

The case was prosecuted by Special Prosecutions Deputy Division Chief Michelle Lopez.
