Avoid 'Unnecessary' Car Thefts: Mount Vernon Police Offer Advice
Mount Vernon PD has a few sensible tips to help keep you from falling victim to a recent string of car thefts and break-ins in the region.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — The MVPD wants to keep you safe and your car out of the hands of thieves. With this in mind, the department is offering a few common sense tips (and some less common knowledge about how car thieves think).
The Mount Vernon Police Department is reminding residents that leaving a vehicle running "just to run into a store" can lead to vehicles being unnecessarily stolen. They advise not giving in to those who are seeking to commit a crime of opportunity.
The department recommends finding a parking space, turning the car off and taking the key with you. For those with keyless ignitions, the police recommend turning the car off because cars can still be driven off without the key fob.
