Car Crashes Into Store, 8-Month-Old Suffers Skull Fracture

YONKERS, NY — An eight-month-old child was critically injured when a car hit the mother and child before crashing through the front of a downtown Yonkers shop early Friday, police said.

The car crashed through the entrance of the shop on Lake Avenue between Waring Place and Voss Avenue at around 8:30 a.m. Yonkers Police Commissioner John J. Mueller said the car struck a parked car before spinning out and driving into the barber shop across the street.

The mother and her baby were hit while crossing the street, according to investigators. The baby was then pinned under the car inside of the shop. The young child is said to have suffered a fractured skull and the mother has a compound fracture to her leg.

Two Yonkers police officers were having breakfast at a bagel shop nearby and were able to help quickly free the woman and the baby from the wreckage.

One person inside the barber shop also suffered minor injuries according to police.

Mueller identified the driver of the car as David Poncurack, a 42-year-old man from Yonkers. The commissioner said a blood test was conducted to determine if he was intoxicated at the time of the wreck. The driver was unlicensed, according to the commissioner.
