Man Arrested For Slashing Victim's Throat: Mount Vernon Police

Two Mount Vernon men were involved in an altercation. During the fight, police say a 52-year-old victim was cut across his neck.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — Police say a Mount Vernon man has been arrested for the slashing of another resident of the city's throat.

The incident that led to the felony charges took place on April 4, around 8 p.m., while the two Mount Vernon men were involved in an altercation. During the fight, police say the 52-year-old victim, Louis Kirkland, was cut across his neck.

Kirkland was taken to Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital by an acquaintance. He was stabilized at Montefiore Mount Vernon, and he was then transferred to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for additional treatment.

After an investigation, Mount Vernon detectives identified the suspect as John Garner. The 35-year-old was apprehended on Sunday and taken to Mount Vernon Police Cellblock, where he was held pending arraignment.

On Monday, Garner was arraigned and his bail was set at $10,000 cash, $100,000 bond, and $300,000 partially secured bond. Garner was then taken to Westchester County Jail pending the posting of his bail.
