Mount Vernon Library Celebrates Newly Acquired 'Heavy D' Collection

On June 30 the Mount Vernon Public Library will host a reception and unveiling of the Dwight Arrington Myers Hip Hop Collection.

On Thursday, June 30 at 6:00pm the Mount Vernon Public Library will host a very special reception in honor of the Dwight Arrington Myers Hip Hop Collection housed at the Mount Vernon Public Library. The reception will be held in the Mount Vernon Public Library Rotunda.

In honor of hip hop legend and Mount Vernon native Heavy D, the Mount Vernon Public Library has acquired a collection of books, music CDs, DVDs and multimedia materials that share the history of hip hop and its global influence.

“Hip Hop has transformed itself from its beginnings in the South Bronx to a cultural phenomenon," says Library Director Carolyn Karowski. “We are honored to celebrate and remember the accomplishments of Heavy D, an awarded artist, and actor who called Mount Vernon his home.”

Committee member Ms. Ann McDermott shared, “What a wonderful way to honor such a remarkable person. Heavy D was a Mount Vernon staple and brought nationwide attention to Mount Vernon and its contribution to hip hop culture.”

This collection will be unveiled by library trustees, staff, committee members and the Myers family.
