MOUNT VERNON, NY — Mount Vernon officials took a step toward restoring Memorial Field, approving a $2.2 million contract to clean up tons of contaminated soil and debris illegally dumped there for a decade.

Flushing-based Tully Environmental is a firm that has successfully performed numerous large-scale projects for the county and the State of New York, said Mayor Andre Wallace in his announcement.

Wallace and Comptroller Deborah Reynolds, acting for the city's 3-person Board of Estimates and Contracts, OK'd a pact with Tully that is 40 percent lower than the initial bid. The original bid was for $3.8 million, Wallace said.

Westchester County agreed in December 2018 to construct a new Memorial Field facility, complete with grandstand, multi-use field, and 8-lane competition track.

The county's move was part of former Mayor Richard Thomas's efforts to have the field restored for recreation. They were stymied by dysfunctional politics at City Hall.
