Mount Vernon Postal Worker Accused Of Stealing $78K In Checks: DA

MOUNT VERNON, NY — A Westchester County grand jury has indicted a mail carrier who is accused of helping himself to U.S. Treasury checks intended for Mount Vernon residents.

Mount Vernon resident Alberto Pino, 31, was indicted for stealing more than $78,000 in checks from the mail he was responsible for delivering while working as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service, Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah announced.

Pino was indicted on a felony second degree grand larceny charge and two counts of petit larceny. He was arraigned in Westchester County Court on Wednesday.

Between January and March 2021, Pino was working as a mail carrier for the USPS when prosecutors say he stole three U.S. Department of the Treasury checks addressed for delivery to residents on his route in Mount Vernon. The checks were valued at $77,365, $600 and $509.

Criminal investigators with the DA’s Office arrested Pino on Wednesday, following a joint investigation between the DA’s Office and the USPS Office of Inspector General, with assistance from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

The case is being prosecuted by Public Integrity and Law Enforcement Integrity Deputy Bureau Chief Brian Weinberg.
